Before installing a water treatment unit, people – poor or very poor – in those remote villages, had no alternative but to « drink water from the pond » (that’s the words used by 1001 Fontaines) or rainwater collected in unhealthy tanks. You should know that the water of the Mekong River contains arsenic among other harmful elements, probably due to infiltration and runoff waters during major tropical rains. Once it has been treated in the filtration unit, no trace of anything!

Some figures to finish up: Open last month, the Prek Por station delivers three surrounding villages out of a total of twelve with a population of 3,770 families (a family counts five people on the average). It delivers 700 bottles to about 20 % of the population. Each bottle is sold 1,200 Riels, that is $ 0.30 (1,5 cent per liter), a nominal fee that may look symbolic from the US or Europe but that adds value to a vital product

The unit is organized in micro enterprise whose manager is a villager who had recourse to micro-credit and, in a year or two, will manage the station as an independent businessman

Restaurants Without Borders is pleased to contribute, even though modestly, to such sources of improvement of life for the Cambodian people who are the most in need
